When Should You Run a YouTube Ad?

In order to understand the differences between YouTube’s ad types, you must first know when it is most advantageous to run an ad. To answer this question, we’ll break down the different types of ads according to the three main types of YouTube videos:

  • Non-skippable video ads
  • Skippable video ads
  • Bumper ads

Non-Skippable Video Ads

Non-skippable video ads are best suited for long-form content like vlogs and tutorials. These ad formats have a higher probability of being watched in their entirety by viewers.

How much does a YouTube ad cost? In contrast, 4 seconds in pre-roll costs $0.80, and 30 seconds in pre-roll costs $10. This is cheaper than an in-stream ad which costs $2 per view. In general, YouTube recommends using TrueView ads for less popular channels but switching to one of the other types for more popular channels so you generate higher revenue per impression. For example, if you have 1 million subscribers and you’re advertising with TrueView ads, you’ll make around $3 per thousand views ($3/1000 x 1000000). That’s not nearly as much as what you would get advertising with one of the other types of YouTube ads!
